Here is a rare large Engraved Sterling Silver (.925) Medal for the Hudson Fulton Celebration of 1909. The Celebration commemorated the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson discovering the Hudson River (1909) and the 100th anniversary of the first use of steam navigation on the Hudson River by Robert Fulton (1807).
The medal was made by Whitehead and Hoag. The medal is in its originalvelvet-lined, leather-bound presentation box. The engravings on the edge of the medal read: JOHN JAY MCKELVEY, STERLING, 60, WHITEHEAD-HOAG.
The weight of medal is an impressive 11.6 ounces of Sterling silver. The medal measures 4.0 inches in diameter.
This is a very special medal since there were only 100 minted. This is NOT one of the many smaller bronze or aluminum medals made for the Celebration. ThisHUGE medal is pure sterling silver! Additionally these rare 100 medals were given only to dignitaries, officials, and members of the organizing commission.
The medal was presented to member John Jay McKelvey, who was a prestigious attorney in New York City. John Jay McKelvey wrote several famous law books which are still available today including: Handbook of the Law of Evidence (1933), and Principles of Common-Law Pleading (1917).
