Antique hand made majolica ceramic plate originating from theMont-Saint-Michel Abbey in Normandy, an important pilgrimage center since the middle ages and before.
The plate is richly decorated in the re-mastered blend of “Rayonnant” and “Rocaille” styles, originally developed in Rouen, France, in the XVII-XVIII cc., over the milk white background. All of the design elements areoutlined in thin black lines. The armotial coat of arms belongs to Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey.
The rim of the plate is decorated with the elaborate radiant cobalt blue scrolls, leaf ornaments and garlands of flowers.
The plate decoration is inspired by the XVII c. Rouen motifs, specifically by “Rayonnant” (Radiant) style consisting of small linear patterns, scrolls, lambrequins, and embroidery borrowed from French ornamentalists of the reign of Louis XIV. Rouen\'s \"embroidery\" is of two kinds: embroidery on background, when the ornament is in blue on white enamel, and - embroidery on reserve, when on the contrary it is the background that is painted. By the artful alternation of these two systems, the Rouen potters obtained decorations of an inexhaustible richness and variety.
Cornucopia was featured on the best examples of Rouen\'s decorative ceramics and was best explained by Henry Frantz in his 1908 book “French Pottery and Porcelain”:“Yet more so sought after is a style of decoration examples of which are still pretty frequently at the market: the decor \"à la cornue\", or cornucopia ornament. Judging by the number of examples preserved in the museums and collections, this style always enjoyed a great vogue. For a long time past, fine examples of Rouen have commanded very high prices. To define clearly the different varieties of the Rouen manufacture, we append the classification of M. André Pottier: according to this classification, the ceramic wares with cornucopia, and - specifically trophies - are considered to be the exceptional pieces\".
Produced in Desvres - Rouen region, France, in the beginning of the XX-th century.
The plate comes in a great condition given its age.
