Bourne Denby Brown Hunting Ware Sprigged Stoneware Large Tankard C. 1850-1870s
Antique stoneware large tankard with brown upper portion and cream lower portion. Top row of sprigs include a man sleeping on a barrel, two men with a lantern, a tree, and windmill with flowers around the base. The bottom row of sprigs include a man on horseback and dogs chasing a fox. Has a leaf and grape cluster sprig at the bottom of the handle. Attributed to Joseph Bourne of Denby. Probably circa 1850 to 1870s. The leaf design at the bottom of the handle is attributed to Denby after 1840, and the windmill is attributed to Denby with flowers around the base alteration believed to date to the late 19th century. From what I understand these are usually unmarked before the 1870s. Has crazing typical of stoneware, a large chip above the handle, a large in manufacture chip on the side of the tankard above the man with the barrel and there is a tight diagonal crack extending from the lip into the body above and behind the sprig of the man with the barrel. Measures approximately 6 7/8 inches wide including the handle x 5 1/4 inches tall. This is an antique and may have small in manufacture defects that do not affect the display of the piece.CUBX
