Up for sale is an antique,James W. Tufts, Silver Plated and Bristol Glass Bud Vase that measuresapproximately 8.75 inches tall. The bud vase alone measures 4.75 inches tall and 1.25inches in diameter at the top opening. To find a base with the original bud vase isvery rare and highly desirable. The base that holds the Bristol glass isexquisite, dainty, detailed and definitely one of the great examples of thework done by James Tufts. A butterfly with wings unfurled and a darling cherubwith face resting on its hands have been applied above the top rim. The rimitself has an etched floral and leaf design with clusters of leaves and aflower applied to it. Two arched, bamboo like branches extend from the round, pedestal base and have an applied butterfly and cluster of leaves attached tothem. A pretty daisy like flower has been added to the bottom of the pedestal base.The silver plated base appears to be in VERY GOOD ESTATE CONDITION. We did not polish the piece, preferring to leave it with the antique patina it has as it accentuates the details. There are no repairs and the bud vase fits into the base securely.The pretty Robin’s egg, blueBristol Bud Vase has been delicately, hand enameled with a cluster of daisy likeflowers, with cheery yellow stamens, growing along leafy stems. The bud vaseand the enameling are in NEAR MINTCONDITION WITH NO CRACKS, FLAKES, REPAIRS OR MAJOR ENAMEL WEAR.

The piece bears the James W.Tufts hallmark with the words, “Boston” and “Triple Plate.” The pattern number,“IC78” is stamped below the mark. James W. Tufts’ business originated inCharlestown, Massachusetts with the making of ornate soda fountain apparatus.In 1875, he branched out and manufactured a line of table wear consisting ofcups and saucers, pitchers, dishes, bases, vases and other popular items. His companyflourished until 1915, though he died in 1902. James W. Tufts is remembered forproducing some of the most unique silver plate of the American VictorianPeriod.This 120+ year old piece wasliterally purchased off of the mantle of an Auburn, Massachusetts estate whereit reportedly had been in the family since originally purchased.
