The "Poor Man's U87!"
This mic is excellent for recording and, live vocals. It has been called "The Poor Man's U87." I have put it up against many mics priced higher and hailed as "Industry Standard" and, it outperformed just about every mic that I compared it to, side by side. Beware of fakes made in China. These mics were made in Russia and are no longer made so, you'll have to buy a used one. I've seen it modified but, it sounds great as is! I highly recommend this mic for home and studio recordings. This microphone is said to be the "poor man´s U87". Pay attention that you get the russian original (out of production, only used ones available) and not the chinese fake and you will get a mic, that is well worth the price you will pay. A good capsule with a warm sound, followed by a mosfet and a fairly good output tranny. Small problem might be the plastic grill on the headbasket, adding a little "boingish" character. You will find a modification for this and the electronics at oktava-mod. After this modification the mic is nearly comparable to a U87.This microphone is said to be the "poor man´s U87". Old school very nice sound
If you like the actual very crisp with high end this mics will not impress you. What make them very special is the way the capture the middle range with a roll off at the very high end. This make the “warm” tone that is very beautiful for me. I also like the proximity effect that maintain a powerful lows without loosing the clarity needed and if still needed more add the high pass filter. I like them very much with strings instruments. The mics suffer a lot of micro phonic problem, yes they need fixing this, but if you are recording low volume instruments in well controlled spaces or even not so well controlled, the mics just may help you bringing all the warm mid tones with very good definition. Stupid review form!
Does it sound good? NO, It's a shock mount for a mic (DUMB!) Is it easy to use? Yes, it fits my two LDC Oktava mics well, and the wing nut works better than another style MIC shockmount I have. Is it lightweight? Who cares it's a shockmount for a mic (DUMB!)

These sound good on their own, but if you do a couple simple modifications yourself it becomes a truly awesome mic. You can clip of the metal grill in front of the capsule, fill the body with silicone & remove the plastic disc covering the capsule - then you have an amazing mic. Google 'oktava mk219 mod' and you'll see. Or you can pay a professional to do the previously mentioned upgrades plus upgrade the electronics - then it will rival a u87 but still have a unique flavor. Note - there are no chinese made versions or any fakes of this particular mic.
