Since the vendor did not accept returns I decided to see if the device could be taken appart and recalibrated to work properly. I feel foolish for not having bought a real new in box.

Keep one as a spare
Ordered as a spare for my furnace. The last spare sat around for 6 years before I needed it. That's the Boy scout mentality in me. Like an oven ignitor, it only goes bad when you need it. At less than $20 it's cheap insurance. Keeping a spare is cheaper than trying to find it locally when you really need one. Certainly a lot cheaper than a service call.
