Modeled after the original Japanese Mega Drive 2, the system includes SEGA’s smaller Japanese-style six-button controller and comes loaded with 60 titles, combining Mega Drive cartridges, Mega CD games and special bonus releases. Like the North American Genesis Mini 2, it connects to modern televisions by HDMI and offers save states and multiple display options.

What makes the Japanese Mega Drive Mini 2 especially interesting to collectors is that its game library is substantially different from the North American Genesis Mini 2.

This makes the Japanese edition particularly appealing to RPG, strategy and Mega CD fans. Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail and Shin Megami Tensei are especially notable omissions from the North American Genesis Mini 2 library.

The Japanese release also handles Ecco the Dolphin CD differently. The original Japanese Mega CD release combines Ecco the Dolphin and its sequel Ecco: The Tides of Time into a single package, and that combined version is reproduced here. The North American Genesis Mini 2 instead presents the two games as separate entries.

There are also many excellent titles shared between both systems, including Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Shining Force CD, Final Fight CD, Silpheed, Night Trap, Virtua Racing, Alien Soldier, Thunder Force IV, Phantasy Star II, Crusader of Centy, Splatterhouse 2, Super Street Fighter II, OutRun, After Burner II and numerous others.

The system also includes several special bonus games and new ports created specifically for the Mini hardware, including Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier, Space Harrier II, Super Locomotive, Viewpoint, Star Mobile, Devi & Pii and VS Puyo Puyo SUN.

Unlike the North American Genesis Mini 2, the Japanese model features the original Japanese Mega Drive 2 exterior design and Japanese-style six-button controller, making the two versions visually distinct as well as giving them different software libraries.

For collectors who already own the North American Genesis Mini 2, the Japanese Mega Drive Mini 2 is far from redundant—the substantial number of different games, particularly its Japanese RPG and Mega CD selection, makes it an excellent companion system.
