\"Hotels\" is a classic 3D real estatetrading board game originally released by Milton Bradley in 1987.Widely celebrated for its impressive visual presentation, the game challenges 2to 4 players to become wealthy hotel tycoons by buying land, constructingelaborate three-dimensional cardboard-and-plastic luxury resorts, and drivingtheir opponents into bankruptcy.
Similar to Monopoly, the goal of Hotels is to be thelast solvent player remaining on the board. Players travel around a perimetertrack, buying up title deeds to prime real estate zones, upgrading theirproperties into high-density resorts, and charging hefty rent to anyone wholands on their territory.
Key Components & 3D Elements
The standout feature of the 1987 edition is its striking three-dimensionalcardboard and plastic structures. Instead of flat tokens, players assemblephysical buildings that tower over the board. A full game set includes:
- The Board: A colorful grid featuring 8 distinct hotel zones (such as Boomerang, Fujiyama, L\'Étoile, President, Royal, Safari, Taj Mahal, and Waikiki).
- 3D Hotel Buildings: Dozens of detailed cardboard structures paired with solid plastic roofs and bases that expand as you build \"extensions\" onto your resorts.
- Entrance Steps: Small, red plastic staircases that are critical to gameplay.
- Banknotes & Title Deeds: Custom paper currency and property cards detailing building costs and rental values.
- Player Tokens: 4 miniature plastic cars used to traverse the board.
How the Gameplay Works
While the premise mirrors classic property-tradingmechanics, Hotels introduces unique twists that heavily rely on luck andtactical building placement:
- The Three-Step Build Process: Owning a plot of land isn\'t enough to collect rent. You must first buy the land deed, then purchase permission to construct the 3D buildings, and finally buy entrance steps.
- The Construction Die: Landing on a \"Build\" space allows you to construct a building or extension, but you must roll a special color-coded construction die to determine your fate. The die can grant permission at full price, half price, double price, completely free, or deny building permission entirely.
- The Power of Entrances: You only collect rent if an opponent lands on a space containing one of your red entrance steps. Players can strategically place these steps on the board to intercept traffic, and multiple tycoons can fight over the same spaces to block their rivals\' income.
- Luxury Tiers: Properties range from the affordable, easy-to-build Boomerang and Fujiyama to the incredibly expensive, high-rent President and Taj Mahal.
Because it was later redesigned and rebranded as HotelTycoon, this original 1987 Milton Bradley edition remains highlysought after by retro board game collectors and vintage toy enthusiasts for itsnostalgic charm and superior build quality.
