If you were looking for a really nice bundle set all inclusive and are trying to find a great deal on some 1980's retro game hall of famers she might be just what you are looking for!! Appearances aren't everything and sometimes if you can look past the less sightly exterior you'll find a real gem, performance wise puts on a show and is a bundle of fun if you are just looking for some at home arcade style gaming on the fly! Or maybe you just have an open coaxial port on your CRT set that you'd like to fill and put to work and have a bit of a blast to the past!
Game Suggestions? My favorites were Parsec, BurgerTime, JawBreaker II & TI invaders (ofcourse) was filming the video for this listing and found myself caught up just playing the games and losing track of the purpose. (😂 I'm a bit OCD so they were relatively addictive regardless of their retro-simplicity! **hard to get away from at times**😨)
The Joysticks are quite tactile and definitely will be preferred by all of your arcade gamers out there (started out just having it placed down but ended up holding it up with both hands and getting more involved in the action) Keyboard warriors will also enjoy the ability to play a more "WASD" style playthrough as this is your secondary mode of tactile gameplay (was a bit trickier for me as its been a while and I have always been a bit more "console gaming" oriented ((was a welcome challenge though!!)))
The RF Video Modulator (display adapter) is ... interesting .. to hookup. The little antenna prongs going out were missing and have been replaced with screw and nut that work perfectly for screwing together to the Antenna to Coaxial adapter which will be the primary mode to attach for video out to your CRT (Sorry A/V gamers she is strictly Retro-Coax ((😎Which feels slightly nice since I am more used to saying the reverse)) could also play via antenna separated terminals but those who already know know. Ch 3 or Ch 4 compatible!
The game case (clear clamshell) is also included which is also an awesome addition to any bodies arcade room definitely gives that genuinely 80's vibe sort of a beigey brown hazey look that matches the console very well (in all her glory).
Game cartridges pop-in and reset the console when inserted to game playback is dead simple occasionally may require a little On/Off again action to fully reset but they all work very well and were bundles of fun! Has the classic insertion pop-in feel that cartridges typically give you which is a wholly entirely (more satisfyingly *imo*) different feel than now-a-days!
Has a good diversity of game genres as well:
The Classics! ("Munch Man" ... ?Pacman? anyone?? never mind that was just me trying to crack a joke) TI Invaders, ParSec, Munch Man, Tombstone City, BurgerTime might feel a bit familiar. ( personally my go to's)
The Obscure! JawBreaker II , MicroSurgeon , Hunt The Wumpus , The Attack - these I found to be just visually and audibley interesting and pleasing and actually a nice throwback to a simpler time of complete and absolute childhood confusion!
Sports! Football , Indoor Soccer (I thought it was funny they called it that "indoor soccer" quite literal, a bit of jest!)
Racing! MunchMobile , Car Wars (Was it the most elaborate of names? .. No. but Car Wars is actually pretty seriously fun)
Cards! BlackJack & Poker
In Summary:
The TI-99/4A is an absolute legend of early '80s tech because Texas Instruments basically crammed a heavy-duty minicomputer CPU the 16-bit TMS9900 into a home console when everyone else was still messing around with 8-bit chips. Sure, TI choked the bandwidth a bit to cut costs, but the machine had this incredible brushed-aluminum futuristic tank vibe, instant-loading "Solid State Software" cartridges, and a custom video chip (the TMS9918A) that defined an entire generation of sprite graphics.It was weirdly over-engineered, bottlenecked in the most hilarious ways, and wildly ahead of its time all at once.
