1801 - KJV Holy Bible Oxford | Common Prayer + Old & New Testaments + Psalms For Sale

A Georgian King James Bible with a story behind it. In 1696 Philip, Lord Wharton left land in his will to fund Bibles for poor children, who first had to learn the catechism and recite set Psalms by heart. This copy was given out by his trustees in 1803, and the cover is still blind stamped with the gift and the year. The original printed Wharton instruction label survives on the front pastedown, listing the Psalms each child had to memorise. Printed at the Clarendon Press in 1801, it contains the Book of Common Prayer, the full Old and New Testaments with tables of Scripture measures, weights, money and time, and the Tate & Brady metrical Psalms of 1799. These charity Bibles are woven into Yorkshire life, the Brontës owned two and Emily wrote the custom into Wuthering Heights. A true piece of social history over 220 years old.
Contemporary full calf, blind roll border, raised bands. Leather rubbed, cracked and scuffed throughout, loss to head and tail of spine and to one board edge, corners bumped and worn. Front cover is cracked along the joint, lower part of the front cover held by the cord only (see last picture). Text block complete as shown. Toning and foxing to endpapers and some leaves, a few small holes to one Psalm leaf. Although the Apocrypha is named in the list of books, it is not included in this Bible. Weight 849g.
