Step back into an American classroom of the 1850s with this charming pair of antique arithmetic textbooks, published before the Civil War. The collection includes Stoddard’s Practical Arithmetic by John F. Stoddard, featuring an 1852 preface, and Introduction to the National Arithmetic by Benjamin Greenleaf, published in Boston in 1857. These fascinating books reflect a time when education emphasized practical mathematics, careful reasoning, and skills essential to everyday life. Their original decorative covers, period typography, and aged pages beautifully capture the character of early American schoolbooks.
What makes this collection particularly special is the opportunity to own two surviving educational artifacts from the same remarkable period in American history. Both books exhibit substantial age-related wear, including staining, discoloration, worn bindings, and distressed covers, giving them an unmistakably authentic antique appearance. The Greenleaf volume displays significant water staining and page deterioration. Perfect for collectors of Americana, antique textbooks, historical educational materials, or anyone who appreciates objects that have survived generations. Sold together as a lot of two, in antique condition, exactly as photographed.
