Offered here is a scarce 1856 copy of \"The Great Supper Not Calvinistic: Being a Reply to the Rev. Dr. Fairchild\'s Discourses on the Parable of the Great Supper,\" written by Leroy M. Lee, D.D., and edited by Thomas O. Summers, D.D. It was published in Nashville, Tennessee, by E. Stevenson & F.A. Owen, Agents for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and printed by A. A. Stitt at the Southern Methodist Publishing House.
This antebellum theological work is a spirited doctrinal defense against Calvinism, presented as a direct rebuttal to Dr. Fairchild\'s discourses on the Parable of the Great Supper. The volume opens with a Preface and Introduction, followed by chapters addressing the Atonement — its sufficiency and design — along with human liability and free grace, hallmarks of the 19th-century Wesleyan-Arminian versus Calvinist debates within American Methodism.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONSmall octavo, bound in the publisher\'s original blind-stamped black cloth boards with an ornate scrollwork and medallion design to the front and rear panels. Outer spine covering is missing, Text block edges are tanned and foxed throughout, consistent with age.
CONDITIONThis is a genuine antique volume being sold as-is, in used condition commensurate with an 1856 printing — please study all photos closely, as they form part of the description. The covers show shelf wear with bumped and worn corners and rubbing to the spine ends; the rear hinge shows some cracking. Boards remain sound and the text block is generally tight. Pages throughout show foxing and age-toning typical of a book this age. The volume carries a previous owner\'s paper label to the front pastedown (a Kentucky minister, Rev. Clyde E. Aldridge) along with period ink inscriptions on the front and rear endpapers, adding to its provenance. No missing pages were noted, but please review every photo carefully before purchasing, as they are part of the listing.
