Color runs around the rim on both sides in russet, gold, violet and blue, with the centers largely untoned. The reverse carries color as well, concentrated around the periphery and through the eagle.
The Morgan dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The obverse shows Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap and a headband reading LIBERTY, with wheat and cotton in her hair, E PLURIBUS UNUM around the top, the date below and thirteen stars around. The reverse shows an eagle with outstretched wings holding an olive branch and arrows, wreathed below, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR around and IN GOD WE TRUST above.
New Orleans struck 5,305,000 Morgan dollars in 1880. The date is common in circulated grades and in the lower mint state range, but becomes considerably harder in the upper mint state grades, since O-mint dollars of this era were typically weakly struck and heavily bag marked. The coin is 90 percent silver.
