1890 Antique Oil Painting Haiphong Vietnam Tonkin Lach Tray River Sampan Signed For Sale

Paintings from France since 2008

On the Lach Tray River at Haiphong, Vietnam, 1890

Antique river scene on the Lach Tray at Haiphong, Tonkin, Vietnam, with a sampan and a woman carrying a shoulder pole, oil on board, signed, located and dated 27 January 1890 on the reverse, in an ebonised and gilt frame.

A woman in a long red robe walks along the bank with two baskets hung from a pole across her shoulder, beside bright cloths drying on bamboo poles, while a boatman in a conical hat rows a sampan past tall bamboo, with a bridge and limestone hills beyond. The Lach Tray is the river that runs along Haiphong, then the port of Tonkin under French protectorate, and the back names it with the date. Its companion, a view of junks at Haiphong of the same size and in the same frame, signed by the same hand, is dated twelve days later and is also offered in our shop.
