Junks at Haiphong, Vietnam, 1890

Antique painting of junks and sampans at Haiphong, Tonkin, Vietnam, oil on board, signed, located and dated 8 February 1890 on the reverse, in an ebonised and gilt frame.

A large junk with two tall brown sails and a red pennant rides on calm water at Haiphong, while boatmen pole a loaded sampan past it and other junks lie off toward a line of blue mountains. A junk sail is stiffened by bamboo battens that let it fold like a fan, and here the battens show as fine lines across both sails. In 1890 Haiphong was the port of Tonkin, then a French protectorate, and this panel was painted there by a traveller whose signature on the back is not yet deciphered. Its companion, a view on the Lach Tray river at Haiphong of the same size and in the same frame, is dated twelve days earlier and is also offered in our shop.
