The Stolen White Elephant was first published byJames R. Osgood and Company in 1882 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. When Osgood's business failed, his stock was taken over by the Charles L. Webster Company who issued copies of the original sheets with the company's own cancel title-page. Twain co-founded the Charles L. Webster publishing house (named after his nephew-in-law) in 1884 to secure greater financial control over his work. The company published several notable Webster-imprint reissues of The Stolen White Elephant, including editions in 1888, 1891, and 1894. Surprisingly, this 1891 Charles L. Webster Company "green edition" can be much harder to find than the actual first edition 1882 Osgood edition.
