This copy retains its handsome original dark cloth publisher\'s binding, decorated in gilt with a red heraldic shield bearing the three lions associated with Jersey. The spine repeats the title and heraldic design in gilt. An illustrated map of the Island of Jersey appears at the front.
Set primarily on Jersey during the late eighteenth century, the novel incorporates the 1781 Battle of Jersey and the wider conflict between Britain and France. It was initially serialized in The Atlantic Monthly beginning in January 1898 before appearing in book form later that year. The novel became a significant contemporary success, ranking among the bestselling books in the United States for 1898.
The title derives from the Biblical passage quoted on the title page: “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.”
