A unique primitive piece!
Lovely primitive 1700's hanging grease lamp. From our research, this style was produced in Europe as a miner's lamp for when in the tunnels, however it could certainly be used in homes, etc as well. The long spike hook hanger allowed for hanging the lamp on a joist, in a rock wall, crack, etc and there is a U-shaped gimballed hanger above the round disk shaped font / reservoir so that the lamp could hang at the correct angle when hung from the wall, ceiling, etc.
We are leaving the condition as-found so you can decide how much you want to clean / oil / restore it, if any.The hinges at the sides of the font don't turn and the font cap doesn't come out as of now. Please see all 24 photos for detailed condition close-ups.
** From a large primitive oil lamp collection in Virginia, USA (betty, grease, crusie and whale oil lamps of different shapes and sizes). See and watch our store for more from this collection - we are offering them now at the same time and they can be shipped together. **
Measurements:The reservoir has a diameter of approximately 5" and 1 3/4" depth (plus the rooster finial)The rooster finial is 1" tall x 1 1/4" wideThe width at the U-shaped arms that hold the reservoir is 5 5/8"The height of the reservoir and its U-shaped holder, including the top loop that connects it to the hanging pole is 8 3/4"
The total height / hanging length from the bottom of the reservoir to the top of the spike hook is 24"The hook hanger pole itself is 14 3/4" long, not including the small hook that attaches to the U-shaped lamp arm
