Antique 1900 “The Royal Treasury: Infant Reader” by Jessie Wilson, published by Thomas Nelson and Sons, London, Edinburgh, Dublin and New York.
Wonderful turn-of-the-century children’s school reader featuring an ornate illustrated cloth cover, early reading lessons, nursery rhymes, word-building exercises, black-and-white illustrations and beautiful color plates.
Especially interesting is the period institutional provenance: the front endpapers are stamped “BOARD OF EDUCATION, TORONTO,” indicating that this copy was once part of the Toronto educational system.
Bibliographic references date The Royal Treasury: Infant Reader by Jessie Wilson to 1900 and describe it as a 96-page primary reader published by Thomas Nelson & Sons.
Condition: Antique/pre-owned condition with age-related wear. Cover shows rubbing, edge/corner wear and discoloration. Pages have expected toning/yellowing, occasional spotting/marks and some edge wear. There is a child’s pencil drawing/writing on the rear endpaper. Binding shows age but book remains intact. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A charming surviving example of early 20th-century children’s education and book illustration, with particularly nice Toronto school provenance.
