1922-D \"No D\" Lincoln Cent, Strong Reverse, a key date/mintmark young cent collectors long remember wanting, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as choice Fine, F-15. Yes, we\'ve got it! It is one of the coins of the Lincoln cent series that many numismatists wrote at the top of their Want Lists and saved up for, whether they followed through eventually or not (most of us took a break in collecting and did not get back to acquiring this until much much later, because, well...at the time a date was a date).
The story of the 1922 workings in the Denver Mint has been told; not all is certain! What is believed is that something happened to a cent obverse die - like a die clashing - and an employee sought out an old one, and filed and polished it so the run with the reverse die in place could continue...but he inadvertently removed the \"D\" mintmark, leaving a weak D sometimes and a \"no D\" in the final part of the run of those dies. As can happen in numismatics, it is a variety or error with a story, and collectors love such stories.
