HISTORICAL CONTEXTBigger money. Until 1929, U.S. paper money was large-size. That July, the Treasury began issuing the smaller notes we still carry, about 6.125 x 2.625 in., after a committee appointed by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon found that smaller notes would save on paper, ink and printing.
The last of the line. Series 1923 was the final large-size $1 Silver Certificate, so this design was among the last \"horse blankets\" in Americans\' pockets before the switch.
