DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
WINONA GUN CLUB
JULY 27, 1924
WON BY
MRS. E.L. KING
43 X 50

The provenance is what sets this piece apart. \"Mrs. E.L. King\" was Grace Watkins King of Winona, Minnesota, co-owner with her husband E.L. King, Sr. of the J.R. Watkins Company, the famous Watkins household-products firm. The Kings lived at Rockledge, the celebrated 10,000-square-foot Prairie School mansion designed in 1911 by architect George Maher (a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright) on the bluffs above the Mississippi south of Winona. Rockledge was demolished in 1987, and surviving objects tied to the King family are now held by collectors and museums including the Minneapolis Institute of Art. A documented King-won sporting trophy is an uncommon survivor, with appeal to Watkins and Winona history collectors, Minnesota and Prairie School enthusiasts, and vintage trapshooting collectors alike. There is also a nice piece of history in a woman taking a doubles championship at a gun club in 1924.
