🧾 1929 Max Carey Type I Original News Service Photograph – PSA Authenticated

Original 6\" x 8.5\" Type I photograph of Hall of Famer Max Carey (born Maximilian George Carnarius), issued by International News Photos and authenticated by PSA/DNA with a full Letter of Authenticity.

Taken during spring training on March 8, 1929, in Clearwater, Florida, this dynamic image captures the veteran leadoff star and base-stealing legend showing off his bunting technique in a crisp Brooklyn Robins uniform. At this point in his career, Carey had assumed dual roles as outfielder and coach—a transition reflected in the original press caption.

A fresh-to-market piece of baseball history, the photo features bold period stamping from International News Photos and includes the original affixed paper caption, still present on the reverse.

🧠 On the Player – Max Carey (1890–1976):

A pioneer in the art of base stealing, Max Carey led the National League in stolen bases ten times and retired with 738 career steals, a record that held for nearly 50 years until Lou Brock broke it in 1974.

Carey starred for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1910 to 1926 and helped lead them to a World Series championship in 1925, where he batted .458. He later joined the Brooklyn Robins, finishing his playing career while also serving as a coach—an unusual dual role during the period.

With 2,665 hits, 1,545 runs, and a career .285 average, Carey was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1961. He was also an innovator off the field—his mother sewed sliding pads into his early uniforms, a concept he later patented, and he co-developed a liniment product for players called Minute-Rub.

🖼️ On the Photograph:

This striking first-generation image, certified by PSA as a Type I photograph, shows Carey mid-action, leaning into a bunt with sharp focus and body control. His striped Brooklyn uniform, clean batting stance, and surrounding players create a visually appealing composition.

The back includes the original International News Photo stamp and an affixed typed press caption, dated 3-8-29, identifying Carey as both outfielder and coach of the Dodgers.
