Original 1937 oil landscape by Maine artist Ethel M. Dana, depicting Bear Mountain in autumn. The painting features a richly textured landscape in deep greens, russets, golds and blues, with the mountain rising beyond the water.The original handwritten inscription on the reverse reads “October – Bear Mountain / Painted by Ethel M. Dana – / 1937.” There are some scratches on the inscription.Ethel M. Dana was a Maine-associated landscape painter documented as having a camp on Bear Pond in Waterford, Maine, where she painted oils during the 1930s. Historical material from the Waterford Historical Society discusses Dana and notably records another locally owned painting by her depicting Bear Mountain.The painting measures approximately 9 3/4 inches x 7 1/2 inches, and the overall framed dimensions are approximately 11 1/2 inches x 13 1/2 inches.Presented in an attractive professional frame, the painting has wonderful texture and impasto throughout, particularly in the autumn foliage. The reverse retains its old backing, hanging wire, handwritten title, artist attribution and date. Conditioner of the painting is very good. There are some small spots on the fabric mat (close up example last photograph).A particularly appealing documented Maine landscape with a strong connection to Ethel M. Dana’s known work in the Waterford and Bear Pond area.
