Offered is a revised 1975 edition of Flowers for Shabbat, produced by Beth Emet – The Free Synagogue of Evanston, Illinois, under the leadership of founding Rabbi David Polish.
While modest in appearance, this booklet represents an important chapter in modern American Jewish history.
Beth Emet was founded in 1950 after Rabbi David Polish left his previous Reform congregation following a dispute over his outspoken support for the newly established State of Israel. At a time when anti-Zionist sentiment remained strong within much of Reform Judaism, Polish and a group of supporters established Beth Emet as “The Free Synagogue,” emphasizing the principle of freedom of the pulpit and a rabbi’s right to preach according to conscience.
Rabbi Polish went on to become one of the leading figures in American Reform Judaism. He served as:
* Founding Rabbi of Beth Emet (1950–1980)
* President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1971–1973)
* Founding President of the Chicago Board of Rabbis
* A founder of the Association of Reform Zionists of America and a nationally recognized author and lecturer.
Beth Emet itself became known for its commitment to free expression, Zionism, social justice, and civic engagement. In 1958 the congregation hosted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and members of the synagogue housed him when local hotels would not.
