19th C Qing Chinese Silk Embroidery Foo Lion Gold Thread Framed Antique For Sale

Antique Chinese embroidered silk textile fragment, believed to date to the Qing dynasty, likely 19th century, depicting a stylized Buddhist guardian lion (fu/foo lion).The brilliant red silk ground is extensively hand embroidered with couched metallic gold-wrapped thread, accented with silk-thread details. Multiple parallel metallic threads were laid over the surface and secured with fine couching stitches, creating the dense sculptural appearance of the lion’s face, mane, body, limbs and dramatic plume-like ornament.The approximately 11” × 13.25” red embroidered section appears to have originated as a fragment of a larger Chinese decorative or ceremonial textile. Partial motifs continue into the perimeter of the surviving panel. It was subsequently mounted within a patterned silk brocade/damask border and professionally presented under glass.Dimensions:• Overall frame: 21” H × 23” W• Mounted textile: approximately 14.5” × 17”• Red embroidered textile: approximately 11” × 13.25”Condition:The antique textile presents very well, retaining strong red color and extensive metallic embroidery. The primary Buddhist lion motif is substantially intact. There are scattered loose/lost metallic threads and other age-related textile wear visible on close inspection.The later black frame has scratches, edge wear and small finish losses. Some dust/debris is visible beneath the glass, especially toward the edges. Paper backing is aged and torn in areas.
