A Huntsman in a Misty Wood
Antique sporting art, a huntsman in a scarlet coat riding a bay horse through a misty wood, oil on canvas, European School, late 19th century, unsigned, unframed.
A rider in a red coat and black cap, seen from behind, walks his horse along a rocky path into a wood of thin trees, where the light turns silver-green in the haze. In England the scarlet coat worn out hunting is called hunting pink, though it has never been pink, and here it is the only warm colour in the whole wood. European School means the painter is not identified, and the period is what the picture itself tells us.
