Michel Korochansky (Odessa 1866–Montigny-sur-Loing 1925)
Lot of two original oil-on-canvas landscapes, each signed lower left M. Korochansky circa 1890's-1910's.
Ukrainian-born, naturalized French in 1906. Studied at the Académie Julian under William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. Exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from the late 1880s (honorable mention, 1910); also showed with the Indépendants and Paris galleries. From 1889 he lived and painted at Montigny-sur-Loing on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau—village, orchard, river, and dusk cottage subjects that became his stock-in-trade. The French state purchased work for the Musée du Luxembourg.
1. Cottage landscape at dusk: Oil on canvas, signed lower left (partially obscured by frame).
A pair of thatched farm buildings under a grey-lilac sky, trees thinning into autumn, a track leading into dark ground. Typical Montigny-country motif: tonal, thickly brushed, made to hang as a finished salon landscape rather than a sketch.

2. River landscape with poplars and village
Oil on canvas, signed lower left M. Korochansky.
Tall poplars and a pale winter/spring sky over water, a village group with a turreted roof on the far bank. Same hand and period as the cottage picture; more open light, still the Fontainebleau-edge repertoire.

Frames:Each in a Louis XV / Rococo Revival gilt wood frame of the commercial type picture dealers fitted to small salon landscapes c. 1890–1920—cast-and-gesso ornament with shells and scrolling foliage, not an 18th-century carved original. Both frames consistent with the pictures and with each other. Verso of one stretcher with a Paris supplier’s stamp (diamond PARIS / L), size mark 24 × 18, and shop codes 2 and F—a ready-made French commercial canvas of the period.
Condition:Both paintings appear in very good condition on visual inspection: no tears, patched holes, or flaking paint observed. Not examined out of the frames or under UV.
