Why Collectors Love the Free Lakota Bank Silver:
In December 2007 the Lakota Freedom Delegation (led by Russell Means) formally withdrew from the United States and declared the free and independent Nation of Lakotah. The following year they launched the Free Lakota Bank — a private bank that only dealt in physical silver and gold. No Federal Reserve notes, no fractional banking, just real metal.
These 1 oz silver pieces were the official currency of that nation. The reverse shows the American bison with the bold legend “CURRENCY OF THE FREE AND INDEPENDENT NATION” and the bank’s website. The obverse features the legendary Lakota warrior Crazy Horse with radiating eagle feathers and the date.
The Free Lakota Bank had a direct bond with NORFED and the Liberty Dollar.
Bernard von NotHaus founded NORFED and created the Liberty Dollar as a private silver-backed currency to compete with the Federal Reserve. After the FBI raided NORFED in 2007 and von NotHaus was later convicted, the Free Lakota Bank and the American Open Currency Standard (AOCS) carried the torch. Same philosophy — sound money free from government control. Same minting network. Same “AOCS Approved” stamp you see right on this coin. It was the natural next chapter after the Liberty Dollar.
How it was made:
Struck in pure .999 fine silver to the classic 1 oz round specs used by the private currency community. Designed and produced under the AOCS standard so it would be recognized and traded by merchants and warehouses that accepted Free Lakota and other AOCS currencies.
When and why it went out of business:
The Free Lakota Bank issued these Crazy Horse rounds from 2008 through 2013. In late 2013 the series was officially retired and the bank shut down its original operations. The website went dark and no new currency was issued. South Dakota regulators had already warned the public in 2013 that it was not a licensed bank and had no official connection to the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Between that pressure, the earlier NORFED crackdown, and the difficulty of running a pure precious-metals bank, Free Lakota Bank ended after six years.
