Mr. Weinman was born in Germany in 1870 and studied art in the United States after arriving in the country at the age of 14. He was commissioned to work with other artists he knew, such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens and James Earle Fraser, as a part of the so-called \"Renaissance of American Coinage\" that occurred between 1907 and 1916. By order of President Theodore Roosevelt, most of the designs of US circulating coins were changed to have a more distinctly American appeal, with elegant representations of Americana of the time period. In this period nearly every coin design was dramatically changed, two of which - the Mercury dime and the Walking Liberty half dollar - were designed by Mr. Weinman.
