BOTH POSTMARKS ARE SPECIAL TO THESE COVERS
These are Royal Mail-approved sponsored cancellations commissioned by the seller especially for the Duran Duran issue. They are not the standard First Day Cover cancellations shown in Royal Mail's issue range. The distinctive blue stamp-set cancellation is available exclusively from this seller.
THE BROAD STREET, BIRMINGHAM CONNECTION
Broad Street was chosen because of its close association with Duran Duran's formative years. The band rehearsed and performed at the celebrated Rum Runner nightclub on Broad Street. The club's owners, brothers Paul and Michael Berrow, became Duran Duran's managers, while several band members also worked at the venue.
The Rum Runner was demolished in 1987, but its former Broad Street location remains an important landmark in Duran Duran's story. These specially commissioned cancellations give the pair a direct philatelic connection with the Birmingham music scene from which the band emerged.
