I bought an old piggy bank at an estate sale in Arkansas, and these pennies were inside of it. I liked the pig, but I also liked the fact that it was filled with change. The estate was a multi-generational home, and they never threw ANYTHING away! It was a time capsule, so I was hoping for some old coins, and the estate did not disappoint. I pulled the pennies out of the pig and looked specifically for three dates: 1943 copper, 1944 steel, and 1955 double-die. I regret to say that I did not find any of those coins, but man what a stash! These pennies have sat in the pig for decades, and most of them are in REALLY nice shape.
The bank held approximately 810 “wheaties” (based on weight at 3.11 grams per penny) and 39 Lincoln cents (actual count), about 5.5 pounds of pennies. I pulled the Lincoln cents, and this sale is for the wheat pennies. It seems as if the kid started saving in the 1940s - 1950s, because there are dozens and dozens of 1940s pennies (especially 1944, geez) and 1950s pennies, and scattered amounts of 1920s, 1930s, and 1960s. The earliest date I found is 1920, and the latest date is 1963. Colors vary from coin to coin, with some really nice coppery coins, some with reddish hues, and some darker, bronze-looking pennies. Condition varies from coin to coin, with many being very crisp, with nice wheat stalks and sharp facial features, while some of the older coins (1920s-1930s) are a bit worn. A surprising number of the 1950s coins are crisp and coppery.
I will ship these pennies bagged up and wrapped in bubble wrap. I don’t have penny wrappers to roll them.
