This officer started his career in the royal Australian Air Force and then became a US officer in World War II. • The Complete Service Timeline:
1. Enlistment: Carey joined the RAAF as an early volunteer, earning the Airman service number A22220. He was issued the standard circular Commonwealth identity discs stamped with this number.
2. Repatriation & Transfer: Once the U.S. was fully engaged in the war, a formal allied treaty allowed American citizens serving in Commonwealth air arms to transfer directly to the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF).
3. Commission: Because he already possessed tactical military aviation training from his time with the Australians, the USAAF automatically commissioned him as an officer upon his transfer.
This is exactly how he received his metal U.S. dog tags stamped with his Officer serial number: O-2040783.
By wearing both tags, Lieutenant/Flight Officer Carey ensured that if he was ever shot down over enemy territory, both American military authorities and Australian records commands could instantly trace his complete tactical history. You will receive the full set of five dog tags. These are original items and not replicas. From the estate of a Collector of Militaria.
