Up for sale is a remarkable piece of American railroad history: a mechanically complete Dietz Vesta Kerosene Railroad Lantern, explicitly stamped for the New York Central lines.
Dating directly to April 1954 (Factory Code: D D), this item is from the very last year of the iconic Dietz Vesta production run. This particular lantern is a true "survivor" piece, showing signs of virtually zero field or yard use before it was stored away.
Key Features & Collector Highlights:
• The Frame: Crisp, deep stampings reading "NEW YORK CENTRAL" around the top brim. It retains its unique vintage two-tone red and black paint scheme, traditionally utilized by rail yards to designate caboose, rear-end trail, or emergency signaling use.
• The Globe: Includes the highly desirable, period-correct clear Corning Nonex (CNX) glass globe. The globe features crisp, thick rims and is boldly embossed with "DIETZ VESTA / NEW YORK U.S.A." alongside the official CNX logo shield. It has no cracks or heavy chips.
• Internal Condition: Unlike many antique lanterns missing their inner parts, this one comes 100% mechanically complete with its original drop-in fuel font and burner unit. The underside of the burner mechanism is remarkably bright and clean with zero rust. The original green-striped cotton wick moves up and down effortlessly with the adjustment wheel and shows only a minor factory-test char at the very tip.
Condition Note: The lantern frame has only been gently wiped down with a paper towel to remove surface storage dust, preserving its honest patina and original paint finish. The globe has been washed to maximize clarity. Please review the high-resolution photos carefully to evaluate the exact condition details for your display.
