This is a wooden bowl made in the Coastal South Carolina area.It is old. I was told it is a Gullah bowl and to be very careful with it. A relative bought it in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. I inherited it in 2010. I can only put what I was told about the bowl by my mom. She had a home in the area and lots of sweet grass baskets and a few wooden items - this is one. I have not had it appraised. To me, it is obviously old and has a nice patina.
The bowl was used by us as a salad bowl. When my mom had it she used it for more than salads but that resulted in some kind of food sticking to the bowl and the house keeper scrubbed some of the stain and paint off. It was unfortunate but it is still amazing and doesn’t bother me. We had it displayed in a China cabinet.
I have no one to leave this to so should it remain unsold I will have it shipped to some kind of museum or gallery in Charleston. At the very least, it is a gorgeous piece and the Gullah works keep going up in price.
Someone purchased this and then asked for a refund stating that she researched Gullah works and they were all “straw baskets”. This is NOT TRUE. Many of the earliest works were made of wood and they are much more valuable than the SWEET GRASS BASKETS. This piece is very old. It was colored with natural pigments - not modern paints. You can also look and tell that this was not turned on a lathe - this was made by a pair of hands !
