A PRESIDENTIAL PRECEDENT
John Tyler became president in 1841 following the death of William Henry Harrison. He was the first vice president to assume the full powers and title of the presidency after a president died in office.
Tyler’s decision to serve as president—rather than merely as an acting president—established an important precedent for presidential succession. His administration also oversaw the process that ultimately brought Texas into the Union.
Tyler died in 1862. This authentic handwritten signature is therefore a remarkable surviving artifact from antebellum America and the earliest decades of the American presidency.
