Condition: A near very good copy. Binding sound and original, with light wear to spine ends and corners. Inner front and back hinges starting but holding; text block firm. Pages clean with only light, scattered spotting and mild age-toning. Gilt to spine bright and legible; cloth fresh and attractive.
First edition, dated internally “Edinburgh, January 1, 1863.” A handsome example of mid-Victorian Scottish evangelical publishing, notable for its decorative cloth binding and expressive wood-engraved illustrations depicting Christian life across professions and social classes (pastor, missionary, soldier, sailor, physician, etc.). An appealing survival in original cloth, complete and unrestored.
