His grandfather went on to help found the Methodist Protestant Church in Baltimore. This family connection placed Boyd within a tradition of religious scholarship and disciplined study. He built his career during the Gilded Age, a time when rapid industrial growth and expanding information created a demand for systems that promised mastery over facts and figures. In the late 1880s he faced professional disputes from rival memory teacher Alphonse Loisette, who publicly accused competitors of plagiarism as the field of memory instruction grew increasingly competitive. Very Good to Good antique condition. Maroon cloth boards have minor discolorations on the front and darker shading at the bottom of the back cover. Book edges are rubbed from age and shelf wear. Spine sides and ends are rubbed and softly frayed. Gold gilt globe on the front and lettering on the spine are still strong and gleam in the light. Decorative endpapers are clean and age-toned with light foxing. String from the sewn binding is visible in the seam of the back endpaper but the sewn binding remains strong and fully intact throughout the book. 216 total satin-finish pages are age-toned with mild foxing and are clean from markups, creases, tears or stains.
