Description Offered for Sale is this Beautiful Stoneware Salt Glazed Jug with Stopper made for Whittier & Guild, Bangor Maine c1837. The jug displays Cobalt Blue decoration beneath the wording Whittier & Guild, Dealers In Drugs, Paints, Oil, Dye, Stuffs, Bangor. There is a stopper with the Jug that may or may not be a marriage. I have been unable to find another example like this. I did find a newspaper article in the Bangor Daily Wig and Courier 1837 detailing this companies\' existence nearly opposite the Penobscot Exchange. It stated that they have a large stock of Drugs, Paints, Oil, Dye and Stuffs (as printed on the jug). Thanks to the assistance of someone far more knowledgeable than I on stoneware, I would suggest the jug was likely a proprietary piece of merchant piece. The likely makers of the jug were Lyman & Clark or R. Thompson (successor to Lyman & Clark), Gardiner Maine or Orcutt and Crafts, Portland Maine. The jug has some condition issues but would make a Great Addition to any Antique Stoneware Collection. 

Size: Height 11\" without stopper - Width 8\" at the widest point on the body 
 
Condition: - Fair Overall Used Condition. The Jug displays light scratching, staining, In the Making imperfections, glaze pops and a number of chips which I will detail. There are four chips to the stoneware on the right side of the decoration. They are somewhat shallow but significant in size (see pictures). There are several small nips / chips scattered throughout. There is the beginning of a separation on the handle from the body (see pictures). Even with the imperfections I have detailed, the jug makes a beautiful display. Please see the pictures to view the condition of the item for yourself.
