Hugh Reginald Haweis (1838–1901) was an influential English clergyman, author, and public lecturer known for his charismatic preaching and wide-ranging intellectual interests. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Haweis was ordained in the early 1860s and later became the popular incumbent of St. James’s Church in Marylebone, London, where his lively sermons and unconventional style attracted large congregations. A passionate advocate for the arts, particularly music, he authored the widely read Music and Morals (1871), which explored the ethical and emotional power of music. He also wrote extensively on topics such as travel, religion, and musical instruments, with works including My Musical Life, Old Violins, and a multi-volume series titled Christ and Christianity. Haweis contributed to the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica and was a well-figure in transatlantic intellectual circles, lecturing in the United States and participating in the 1893 Parliament of the World\'s Religions in Chicago. Despite a physical disability that stunted his growth, Haweis was known for his dynamic presence, eclectic interests, and ability to make theology, aesthetics, and culture accessible to Victorian audiences.
