Africa exploration Egypt Libya Sonnini & Browne 1802 Philadelphia leather book
Issued 1803, Philadelphia by Samuel Bradford for Mavor’s Account of the most celebrated voyages, travels and discoveries. Three engraved plates.
This rare book contains “travels in Egypt and Libya by Mr. Brown from the year 1792 to 1798” and “travels in upper and lower Egypt by M. Sonnini performed in the year 1777 and 1778”
An early American printing of these two explorations into regions of northern Africa, both conducted just a few short years before this volume was published.
In the original period full swirled tree calf leather binding, the original contrasting gilt title label bright and fresh in appearance. Book is sound and tight. A remarkable state of fresh physical preservation, looking nearly as when issued, compared to most other books of this era which show their age far more severely.
Paper remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal. Scattered age spotting and small stains, some toning, large paper bookplate to front paste down, 1899 ink inscription to front free endpaper.
Nice looking example of this rare book in about as well preserved condition as could ever be hoped for from this 225 year ago era.
Book measures c. 6 3/8\" H x 4 1/4\" W.
