Alfred Tennyson – Idylls of the King
A charming antique pocket edition of Alfred Tennyson's classic Arthurian poems, published by Edward Moxon & Co., London. This undated Victorian edition is believed to date from the mid-19th century (circa 1860s) based on the publisher, typography, and binding style.
The book features an attractive light-colored leather binding with gilt decoration to the spine, a red leather spine label, marbled endpapers, and red-stained page edges. Measuring approximately 6 x 4 inches, it is a handsome and highly displayable pocket edition.
An interesting feature is the period ownership inscriptions. One records the book being purchased in Paris and Rome in 1867, while later notes document subsequent ownership in London, Canada, and the United States, adding to its provenance and historical appeal.
Condition
Very Good antique condition.
The binding remains sound with hinges secure and pages firmly attached. The vellum covers are clean and attractive with expected age-related toning and light shelf wear. The spine shows moderate rubbing, particularly to the red leather title label, and the boards exhibit slight bowing consistent with age.
The text block is generally clean with scattered foxing and age toning. There is light waviness and a faint moisture stain affecting the lower margins of portions of the text block, but all pages remain fully readable. Contemporary ownership inscriptions and later provenance notes are present on the front endpapers, adding historical character.
