Common Causes of Radiator Failure

A broken water pump, bad hoses, fluid obstructions, bubbles in the coolant, or a faulty temperature gauge.
Maintenance Tips for Longevity
Regularly check coolant levels and top up as needed – never let the reservoir run dry.
Inspect under the bonnet before summer and winter to catch potential issues early.
Have the cooling system flushed (radiator and hoses) by a mechanic once a year to remove rust, scale, and residue that can cause blockages.
With proper maintenance, a radiator typically lasts between 8 and 10 years.
How to Clean the Radiator
1.Start the vehicle and let it reach normal operating temperature. Slowly open the radiator cap (engine cool). Add a cleaner that is compatible with any coolant. Let the engine idle for at least 15 minutes (30 minutes if the system has not been cleaned in two years). Then drain the coolant and flush the radiator with clean water until the outflow runs clear.
2.After flushing, refill the system with fresh coolant and purified water according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
How to replace the radiator
1.Wait until the engine is completely cool.
2.Inspect all hoses, clamps, and connections to understand what needs to be removed.
3.Drain the coolant via the radiator drain plug into a large catch pan; save and filter the fluid for potential reuse.
4.Remove the overflow tank and disconnect the small tube.
5.Unplug the cooling fan electrical connector (press the tab to release).
6.Use pliers to loosen the metal clamp and remove the upper radiator hose.
7.Remove the lower radiator hose (may require jacking up the vehicle for access).
8.If equipped, disconnect the automatic transmission cooling lines.
9.Remove the radiator mounting brackets, then lift out the old radiator.
Important Safety Warnings
Always drain air from the cooling system – refer to the user or repair manual for proper procedure.
Follow the owner’s manual when adding coolant.
Do not open the bonnet until steam has subsided – the engine compartment may be extremely hot and cause burns.
Stop the vehicle immediately if the dashboard shows “ENGINE OVERHEAT” or if steam rises from under the bonnet.
Keep hands and clothing (especially ties and scarves) away from fans and belts – they can become caught and cause serious injury.
Never loosen the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are hot – pressurised hot coolant and steam can cause severe burns.
Always exercise caution when replacing the radiator.
