An Artist in Spain, written and illustrated by A. C. Michael, is a hardcover travel and art volume published by Hodder and Stoughton of London, New York, and Toronto, circa 1914. Michael combines descriptive travel writing with his own artwork documenting Spain and its landscapes, towns, architecture, customs, and people. The contents include sections devoted to Southward, Segovia, Salamanca, Zamora, Almazán, Madrid, and the bull-fight, among other subjects. The volume contains numerous mounted color illustrations, including Spanish street, architectural, and landscape scenes. The original cloth binding features decorative lettering and a gilt-and-black heraldic device to the front board. This is an attractive early twentieth-century illustrated travel volume with strong period character and visual appeal.
Condition: Hardcover shows rubbing, discoloration, and edge and corner wear to the cloth. The front inner hinge shows separation with exposed binding material visible along the hinge. Pages show age toning. Mounted color plates remain present and display well.
