Impressive Early Byzantine Gold Solidus of Anastasius I, the Emperor of Monetary Reform
Anastasius I came to the throne in AD 491 and ruled during a pivotal moment in the transformation of the Eastern Roman Empire into what later historians would call the Byzantine Empire. A capable administrator and reformer, Anastasius is especially remembered for his sweeping monetary reforms, which stabilized the bronze currency and helped strengthen the imperial treasury. His gold solidi continued the venerable Roman tradition of high-purity imperial gold coinage, serving as the prestige currency of the Mediterranean world.
This attractive AV solidus presents Anastasius in the classic late Roman imperial manner: a facing military bust, helmeted, cuirassed, and holding spear and shield, projecting the emperor as divinely sanctioned commander and guardian of the state. The obverse legend reads D N ANASTASIVS P P AVG, expanded as Dominus Noster Anastasius Perpetuus Augustus, “Our Lord Anastasius, Perpetual Augustus.” In Greek historical context, the emperor’s name is meaning “Anastasius,” a name evocative of “resurrection” or “restoration.”
The reverse depicts Victory standing, holding a long cross, an image that beautifully bridges Roman triumphal iconography and the increasingly Christian identity of the Eastern Empire. The legend VICTORIA AVGGG proclaims “Victory of the Augusti,” while the exergual CONOB denotes the Constantinople mint and the refined gold standard. In Greek cultural terms, Victory corresponds to Νίκη, “Nike,” the personification of victory, here adapted to Christian imperial symbolism through the prominent cross.
Certified by NGC as AU, this solidus offers a notably sharp Strike: 5/5, with the imperial portrait and reverse Victory well articulated for the issue. The surfaces are graded Surface: 3/5, with the holder noting brushed and an edge mark, yet the coin retains strong visual appeal, bright yellow-gold color, and an engaging late antique style. The centering is pleasing, the major devices are complete, and the portrait retains the commanding presence sought by collectors of early Byzantine gold.
Gold solidi of Anastasius are highly desirable as tangible witnesses to the early Byzantine state, the continuation of Roman imperial authority in Constantinople, and one of the most important monetary systems of late antiquity. Combining historical importance, enduring gold content, and classic imperial iconography, this example is an appealing acquisition for collectors of Byzantine, late Roman, and ancient gold coinage.
A handsome and historically meaningful solidus from the reign of the emperor who helped define the financial foundations of Byzantium.
