Lucania Metapontum AR Stater, Demeter & Barley, NGC - VF
Lovely Stater of Metapontum, minted between 320 and 290 BC Weight: 6.88 g.
Obverse: head of Demeter facing right, a barley wreath woven into her hair.
Reverse: an ear of barley, which symbolized prosperity and fertility, along with tongs and the inscription META An additional advantage is the wonderful gray patina and extraordinary details, and the portrait itself practically emerges from the flan. Lucania: a historical region in the south of ancient Italy, between the Tarantine Gulf and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Metapontium, or Metapontum: was an ancient city of Magna Graecia, located on the Gulf of Tarentum, between the Bradanus and Casuentus rivers (modern Basento). It was located about 20 km from Heraclea and 40 km from Tarentum. The ruins of Metapontum are located in the frazione of Metaponto, in the municipality of Bernalda, in the province of Matera, in the Basilicata region of southern Italy.
