Original edition of the ‘Village Voice’ dated Thursday 27 October 1966 containing two (2) 4.5cm x 5cm and one (1) large 7cm x 24cm mono print advertisements for Andy Warhol’s Plastic Inevitable - featuring The Velvet Underground and Nico - at the Balloon Farm on St Mark’s Place.
These two ‘last New York’ dates follow the Exploding Plastic Inevitable’s debut at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry annual banquet at the Delmonico Hotel on January 13, subsequent March-April ‘residency’ at the Dom on St Mark’s Place and national tour.
The Dom had been renamed the ‘Balloon Farm’ by late-1966, by which point the band and Nico had recorded their debut album, which was later released by Verve Records in March 1967, co-produced by Tom Wilson and featuring Warhol’s iconic ‘banana’ cover.
These ads are definitely a piece of rock history and will look fantastic framed. Note ‘Exploding’ appears to have been dropped from the title on the larger ad for these dates.
As a bonus, there’s also an ad for a Timothy Leary psychedelic ‘happening’ at NYC’s Village Theater.
