Large Antique Hand-Forged Wrought Iron \"Butterfly\" HingeLikely Continental Europe
Possibly 17th or 18th Century
A very old hand wrought Butterfly hinge with singular charm and style.Each leaf a mirror of the other, comprised of four curved “branches” terminating in flowers or rosettes at each end. Leaves have cutout hearts and (3) punched nail holes each. 3 part knuckle in center allows for smooth opening and closing.
This extraordinary hinge was found in the attic of a c1800 house in Central Massachusetts, but I do believe it could be a good deal older, probably Continental Europe of unknown age.Aesthetic and construction is similar to pieces as far back as Medieval times.
Size: 16.5 in. L (in “open” position) x 12 in. W.Weight, unpacked: 2 lbs., 8 oz.Condition is EXCELLENT, presenting with minor surface oxidation.
