This stunning antique plant illustration was created using chromoxylography, a richly colored woodblock printing process popular in the 19th century.

This botanical plate is from the second edition of Ferns: British and Exotic, published by George Bell & Sons. The work is a collaboration between Lowe, Lydon (illustrator), and Benjamin Fawcett (engraver). Each print captures the delicate beauty of ferns with remarkable precision and color.
Ferns: British and Exoticis considered one of the most celebrated Victorian botanical publications. Edward Joseph Lowe (1825?1900) was a respected naturalist, meteorologist, and astronomer. The chromoxylographs in this series reflect the high craftsmanship of 19th-century botanical illustration.

ConditionEach antique print arrives with an archival acid-free 2-ply board and in a poly sleeve suitable for archival storage.
See the photos for the actual condition of the print. Being that this print is over 150 years old, it is in good condition. The colors remain vibrant and stable. The paper is medium weight, strong and not brittle. The reverse side of the print is blank. This print is a full untrimmed page and therefore the binding edge is naturally uneven. Please look at the photos carefully, including cropped detail photos, which will show you more than you can see with your eyes alone.
