Title: Max Tonk's New Method for the Reed Organ (New and Enlarged Edition)
Publisher: Max Tonk / The Tonk Manufacturing Co., Chicago, IL.
Format: Oblong Hardcover/Boards
Up for sale is a wonderful piece of 19th-century musical history: "Max Tonk's New Method for the Reed Organ." This antique instruction book was self-published in Chicago by Max Tonk, whose company eventually became world-famous for manufacturing high-quality piano stools and benches. The back cover beautifully highlights this legacy with an advertisement graphic for The Tonk Manufacturing Co. featuring one of their signature stools.
This "New and Enlarged Edition" contains full instructions, technical exercises (such as A-flat Major and D-flat Major scales), and choice vocal and instrumental arrangements, including classical pieces adapted from Verdi and traditional Irish melodies.
CONDITION DETAILS:
- Cover: Shows prominent wear along the edges, corners, and spine as expected for its age. The green cover has some surface staining and scuffing, but the ornate black typography and borders remain clear and legible.
- Binding: The spine and binding are structurally intact, holding the pages together well.
- Interior Pages: The pages are remarkably clean with no major water damage or tears. There are light, erasable vintage pencil notations from a previous student (e.g., "April 24" written on page 40). Minor natural yellowing/age toning around the edges.
This is an excellent addition to any collection of antique sheet music, Victoriana, or historic Chicago ephemera. It doubles beautifully as a display piece on an antique pump organ or piano!
